The 143rd in Iraq is the historical account of a National Guard Military Police Company's attempt to recruit, train and prepare an Iraqi Police Force in 2003-2004. Every American needs to know what politicians mean when the say the United States should continue training Iraqi police and military with "boots on the ground." Soldiers from the 143rd were activated for Iraq and sent to Fort Drum New York in the dead of winter to train up for 120 degree heat of Baghdad. The unit distinguished it self during the course of the deployment and was awarded, 13 Bronze Stars,13 Purple Hearts, and 10 Army Commendation Medals with "V" for Valor. The unit as a whole was awarded the Valorous Unit Citation for consistent and repeated acts heroism facing an armed enemy.
